Why is it so important to have courage to know yourself? Many of us live in the dark. We live a mundane and complacent lifestyle. We follow the crowd. We tell ourselves we are happy, but we are not. We find it easier to lie to ourselves so that we feel better. We need to feel better so we can continue living a life we are unhappy with otherwise we may implode.

Courage to Look Within

I really believe, though, that we all know – we can intuitively sense – the extent to our inner power, but we are afraid to use it. We are afraid to move out of the social norms that keep us restricted to a compliant system rather than use our courage to live with purpose and in creativity, as well as contribute to the betterment of the world. I can say this because I’ve been here. It’s so much easier to follow a crowd that is going in the wrong direction. It is like the blind leading the blind.

Question Everything

Have you ever questioned things? All things? I started questioning things when I was a kid. I’d go to church. The preacher would say one thing. I’d go home and dad would say another thing. I questioned the contradictions – the errors. I questioned choices and lifestyles. My cheeks would sting like a bitch when I got slapped every time I questioned something that didn’t seem right, but it didn’t stop me. It only filled me with more fire. That was one thing I was absolutely certain about in a life filled with chronic abuse and dysfunction. I knew what I sensed and what I could hear from within. It was real, and it was my fire. It was more real than what was on the outside. It was a greater sense of power than a small mind could grasp.  Yet, today, and 45 years later, there is still this huge blanket that covers so many of us, and, I’m not really sure if it is total ignorance or fear of standing out.

The Most Basic Harm Is To Remain Ignorant

I love Pema Chodron’s statement about the courage to know yourself. “The most fundamental aggression to ourselves, the most fundamental harm we can do to ourselves, is to remain ignorant by not having the courage and respect to look at ourselves honestly and gently.” And, that’s what it is! The lack of courage and self-respect to look within. Fear keeps us committed to the illusions that surround us – what we choose to believe and feel. We are swallowed up by this crap and are afraid to go a different direction. We conform. It’s easier going with the crowd than against it. It’s easier because we don’t have to listen to their criticisms of the majority.  Just go to university, for example, and you can figure this out really fucking fast – how you must conform to the system!

Be Courage

Whatever it takes, find the courage to know yourself. Live life with abandon. You won’t be disappointed! From here, you can make grounded decisions from your source not from the whims of other people’s influences. Heed the advice of your inner-self; that’s when you will begin living a life on purpose and a life with integrity.
