As a woman wellness coach and life coach consultant, I understand the importance of personal integrity in achieving overall well-being. Personal integrity is the foundation of trust and credibility, an essential component of mental and emotional health. It’s a quality that can make a significant impact on our lives, both personally and professionally.

In this blog, Desiree Leigh Coaching will explore what personal integrity is, why it’s important, and how to develop and maintain it.

What is personal integrity?

Personal integrity is, basically, the sum of ethical standards that communicate what kind of person you are and how you treat others. A better way to define personal integrity is a person having strong morals or values and following those principles in both words and actions. During self-evaluation, ask yourself these questions, “Do my words match up with my actions?” “Do my actions reflect my personal values and ethical or moral principles?” Many of us go through life blindly doing things without really contemplating why we are doing what we do. As years pass, we find ourselves unhappy, yet we can’t really put our finger on why we are unfulfilled in life. The concept of having integrity is really quite simple, yet many of us don’t live by our moral standards – we don’t live authentically.

Research shows that personal integrity can have a significant impact on your mental health.

Studies have found that people who have a high level of personal integrity tend to have better mental and emotional health outcomes than those who don’t. This is because personal integrity promotes a sense of self-respect, self-esteem, and self-worth. It also reduces stress and anxiety, and we know that these have a negative impact on mental health.

    • Having personal values is positively linked to happiness.

    • When considering your values before a stressful event (such as a speech or a business/family meeting), the event is less stressful.

    • Knowing your values allows you to discern between what is urgent and important and what is not.

Why is personal integrity so important?

Personal integrity is important because it shows that you are aligned with doing the right thing no matter what happens. A person with high personal (or professional) integrity is more likely to feel satisfied in life since they know their values and priorities and aren’t afraid to take action to pursue them. Personal integrity is also essential for building a positive reputation and maintaining a sense of self-respect and dignity. Personal integrity helps us make better decisions, and it guides our actions toward what’s right, even when it’s not the easiest choice.

On the contrary, when we aren’t living authentically or with personal integrity, our self-esteem and self-worth get eroded. With the erosion of these self-concepts, we start to feel down, depressed, doubtful, and confused, which then leads us to compromise our character, and so we may become docile, apathetic, or lash out in anger and or frustration. With such energetically low moods, it becomes very easy for the shadow of others to attach to us, lowering our standards and compromising ourselves. Without personal integrity, it’s challenging to build meaningful relationships with ourselves and others.

Some core values of integrity are:

    • Honesty

    • Kindness

    • Respect

    • Responsibility

    • Accountability

    • Courage

    • Gratitude

    • Trustworthy

As a woman wellness coach and life coach consultant, I encourage my clients to identify their own core values and align their actions with them. This helps them stay true to themselves and develop a sense of personal integrity.

How do you show personal integrity?

Personal integrity is demonstrated by the way you live your life day by day with a sense of consistency. If honesty is one of your core values, are you honest only when you are in a good mood, or do you live by the value of honesty in all your interactions? These are the kind of questions you need to ask yourself. Personal integrity means being honest and transparent, even when it’s uncomfortable. It also means taking responsibility for your actions, admitting when you’re wrong, and making amends when necessary.

As a woman wellness coach and life coach consultant, I believe that personal integrity is essential for overall health and wellness. Personal integrity is important because it shows that you are aligned with doing the right thing no matter what happens. It’s the foundation of trust and credibility, and it’s essential for mental and emotional health. By developing and maintaining personal integrity, we can build meaningful relationships, make better decisions, and live a life of purpose and meaning. So, let’s commit to living a life of integrity and being true to ourselves and our core values.
