Busted! Don’t Believe These Myths About Coaching!
Women have special needs, and to guide them through difficult times, they need special women coaches who can not only understand their concerns better but also offer solutions that can help them stay motivated. These days coaching is becoming a trend, and people are susceptible to falling prey to unqualified and uncertified coaches.
Apart from this, people lack awareness about this industry, so they often fall for an uncountable number of myths that are mostly false. It is best to seek advice from a professional willing to offer their help in genuinely giving direction to your life.
To help you steer clear of these misconceptions, Desiree Leigh Coaching has debunked some of the most widely believed myths about coaching.
Myth 1: Coaching is only for corporate and businesses
Executive and business coaching is a common form of coaching and is an effective way to strengthen leadership and management performance. These coaches are interested in helping others create thriving businesses and high-performing executives that can create lasting and productive changes. However, at the core of coaching, one needs to change oneself. This means that coaches (the individuals being coached) need to do the self-work guided by a coach. A coach stands alongside their client and supports them through challenges by getting personal and invested in the client’s life. At a basic understanding, coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person supports the client in achieving a specific personal, professional, or business goal by providing tools and guidance. Coaching at its best unlocks the person’s potential to maximize their performance by helping individuals learn to silence their inner critic and to work through limiting beliefs and attitudes. As you can see, coaching can be utilized for relationships, family, dating, divorce, careers, finances, life skills, spirituality, mental health, health and wellness, and, in general, any personal leadership.
Myth 2: It is possible to coach everyone
Absolutely not! Not everyone can be easily coached. One is coachable only to the degree to which they are receptive to making positive, long-term change, both in their thinking and behavior. It cannot be determined by age, degree, position, experience, intelligence, or industry. Coachees must have a willingness to listen and go above and beyond what the social norms are. One must have a sense of drive and determination to be able to want to create change within their lives, even in the face of adversity. They must also take ownership of their life rather than blame everyone else for their problems and be accountable for their actions.
Myth 3: We all are skilled coaches
Everywhere on social media is calling themselves a coach because being a coach is the “in” thing to do. Having reviewed some new coaching programs, it looks like you can get a coaching degree (and, yes, they actually call it a degree!) in three hours to a weekend. Terms are thrown around like grass seed, but one must do their due diligence to ensure they are getting what they pay for. The same goes for a good coach. Remember that there are different styles of coaching. One coach may be more authoritarian and autocratic, while another may be more holistic and democratic. It depends on your preference. I am more of a visionary coach. Coaching is an art and a science. There are techniques a coach can use, but dancing between the two (art and science) is really what coaching is all about.
